Cistercian Monastery Trail PDF Print E-mail

This six-day trail will take you across the historical Cistercian Route, where you can enjoy the culture, gastronomy and diverse landscape of the area. The accommodation will be in comfortable hotels, country farmhouses and in a monastery. At lunch-time a delicious picnic will be served where you can try the local specialties and wines. You will ride through woodlands, across rivers, and canter through vineyards.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival. By own arrangements or transfer from Barcelona or Reus airport to your hotel.

Day 2 - Rodonyà - Santes Creus, 4 hour ride. From the stables you will cross beautiful countryside of vineyards, woodlands and a river to reach the monastery of Santes Creus. A visit to the monastery is a must.

Day 3 - Santes Creus - Prenafeta, 4 hour ride. From the main square in Santes Creus you will leave towards Prenafeta. Along the way you can enjoy an appetitive in Figuerola del Camp. After lunch a visit to the medieval town Montblanc is definitely worth while.

Day 4 - Prenafeta - Les Masies de Poblet, 4 hour ride. From Prenafeta you will make your way towards Poblet. After lunch you can visit the beautiful medieval monastery of Poblet which has been restored to its former glory.

Day 5 - Poblet - Vallbona de les Monges, 6 hour ride. Today you will ride towards Vallbona de les Monges. The ride will take you past the “Disset Fonts” which is the origin of the river Francolí. The picnic will take place at the Tallat Sanctuary which dates back to 1081 and is 787m high, where you can take in the spectacular views. After lunch you will continue towards the Vallbona de les Monjes monastery where you will spend the night.

Day 6 - Vallbona de les Monges - Montbrió de la Marca, 5 hour ride. Today’s landscape gradually changes from mountains to extensive corn fields, woodlands and vineyards. The picnic will take place at Forès, a village upon a hill (864 meters) with an incredible view over the Conca de Barberà and the Sagarra area. Tonight’s accommodation is in a picturesque country hotel which offers excellent local meats and sausages made on the premises.

Day 7 - Montbrió de la Marca - Rodonyà, 6,5 hour ride. Today you will ride back to Rodonyà. The picnic will take place in the region of el Pont d’Armentera. On arrival at the stables you will be awaited by a Spanish dressage show and a barbeque. Tonight’s accommodation will be in the same hotel as on arrival.

Day 8 - Departure. After breakfast departure by own arrangement or transfer to Barcelona or Reus airport.

The price includes:

Accommodation: 7 nights full board in twin-bedded rooms based on shared occupancy, most nights with en-suite bathroom

 

Evening meal from the first day, including wine, lunch, and breakfast up until the last day.

 

Horses, guide and luggage transport.

Not included:

Single room supplement (subject to availability) to be paid in Spain. Price subject to accommodation.

 

Group transfer from and to Barcelona airport: € 70,00. Reus airport € 40,00. (based on 4 persons)

 

Drinks which are not included in the menus.

12 years (children up to 16 years are to be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian).

Riding experience:

These rides are suitable for competent to experienced riders, the horses are all well schooled and forward going. In order to participate in one of these rides it is necessary that you can control a horse outside at all paces, and that you can mount and dismount without assistance.

Fitness:

You will need to be reasonably fit to participate on one of these rides and able to spend long hours in the saddle. In addition to being riding fit you will be required to lead your horse on some of the steep descents, and need to be comfortable walking on rough ground.

Clothing:

Comfortable riding trousers, riding boots with a rubber sole suitable for walking where necessary.
Long sleeve shirts with collar, rainproofs, gloves, full or half chaps, hat (hard hat recommended), sunglasses, sunscreen and a water bottle.
You will also need to bring a sleeping bag for the night’s stay at the monastery or refuge.

Horse care:

We find it important that our guests ‘bond’ with their horse during the trail by helping with grooming and feeding (not obligatory).

Insurance

All riders must take out holiday and accident insurance prior to commencing the ride. Spain has a National Health Service and it is recommended that participants from other E.E.C. countries obtain a form E111 from their local post office which will entitle them to medical service while in Spain.
